Pismo Beach secured the top spot in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, earning the title of Best Small Coastal Town in the United States. For the ranking, travel experts nominated 20 destinations, editors narrowed the list, and the final decision was determined by public voting over several weeks.
Thousands of votes pushed Pismo Beach ahead of competitors across the country, including well-known coastal stops like Stuart, Florida, and Cape May, New Jersey. The Central Coast town held onto the number one position for the second year in a row, emphasizing that its appeal isn’t a one-time thing. With a population just over 8,000, it fits neatly into the “small town” category while still offering enough to keep visitors busy.
A Beach Town That Doesn’t Feel Predictable

Many coastal destinations rely on scenery. Pismo Beach starts there but doesn’t stop. The shoreline stretches wide, giving it a more open feel than many crowded California beaches.
