This Might Be the Most Underrated Adrenaline Rush in Switzerland
Switzerland is known for headline-grabbing thrill experiences, including skydiving over glaciers, steep mountain railways, and extreme ski descents. Still, one of the most intense rushes in the country is also one of the most overlooked.
At the summit of Grindelwald First, a narrow steel walkway is anchored directly into a vertical rock face. The structure guides visitors along the rock face and out onto a glass platform that extends about 45 meters into open space. The path is short and does not require special skills or equipment. Exposure to open air and dramatic heights creates an immediate physical reaction the moment you step forward.
The First Cliff Walk by Tissot proves that you do not need speed or extreme sports to feel your pulse rise. Sometimes, standing still at the edge is enough.
A Walkway That Feels Completely Outside Everyday Experience
At the glass platform, the full landscape opens instantly. The valley stretches below, while surrounding peaks dominate the horizon. On clear days, the Eiger massif can be seen with striking clarity.
The Bernese Alps extend outward in layered ridges. The contrast between the solid mountain terrain above your head and the open air below your feet creates a strong visual effect.
The walk usually takes between five and ten minutes, depending on how often you stop.
How Altitude Shapes the Physical Sensation

Grindelwald First is at roughly 2,168 meters above sea level. At this height, the environment directly shapes the experience. Wind moves across the cliff face, and some visitors report feeling slight movement due to wind exposure. The structure is engineered for safety, but the body still responds to perceived movement.
Cold air sharpens awareness, and some visitors become more aware of their breathing at this elevation. The exposed alpine environment can make sounds feel sharper and more noticeable to some visitors.
Surprisingly Easy to Access
The walkway itself is free. Visitors pay only for the gondola ride from Grindelwald village to Grindelwald First, which takes about 25 minutes and offers dramatic mountain views on the ascent.
Once at the summit station, the path to the cliff walk is short and clearly marked. Technical gear is unnecessary, though sturdy footwear is helpful, especially in winter conditions.
Since access is straightforward, the walkway attracts a wide mix of visitors. Grindelwald First is also known as the “Top of Adventure,” with zipline-style rides, mountain carts, and long hiking routes.
