This department of Colombia is unique in many ways: It is actually off the coast of Nicaragua, its main languages are English and patois (a form of creole) rather than Spanish, and non-islanders are not allowed to stay for more than three months, not even Colombian mainlanders!
The archipelago is made up of three islands: San Andres, the largest island; Providencia, the smaller island; and Santa Catalina, a tiny cay connected to Providencia by a bridge. You must fly into San Andres and then choose whether you want to stay there and enjoy its more modern vibe or take a ferry or a small plane to Providencia.
In our opinion, you should spend a day in San Andres, then head on to Providencia without hesitating. With a single road around the island that you can complete in 40 minutes, this tiny place is truly paradisical. Your days will be spent at the beach or deep in the sea. There are no luxury hotels or chains, and that’s exactly what we love about it.
