We can all agree drunk tourists are the worst tourists, and two British travelers proved just how true this is when they stole a penguin from an Australian zoo in 2012.
The pair didn’t take any old penguin. They took Dirk, a famous penguin at the Gold Coast SeaWorld. We normally wouldn’t support anything SeaWorld does, but in this case, taking an animal endangers its life even more than being trapped in a cage does.
The men woke up with the penguin in their apartment the next day, and rather than own up to their behavior, they tried to release it in a canal. This could have easily led to Dirk’s death, but thankfully, people saw them and reported them.
Dirk was brought back to the park, where his girlfriend Peaches was (we want to imagine) impatiently waiting for his return. Before kidnapping the aquatic bird, the tourists had jumped into the dolphin tank to swim with them and set off a fire extinguisher in the shark tank.
Australia hopes they never visit again.
