Best Brunch in Every U.S. State
Brunch isn’t just a meal — for many, it’s practically a lifestyle. Unlike its siblings, breakfast and lunch, brunch conjures images of a leisurely weekend meal shared with friends, of indulging in dishes typically not on your daily diet plan, of lingering over a mimosa or Bloody Mary because there’s nowhere else you need to be.
But brunch isn’t a one-dish-fits-all meal. As these restaurants show, while there are certainly some staples, popular brunch dishes can vary wildly, taking influence from the season, the local produce, international cuisine, or the chef’s own imagination.
The following restaurants are the best for brunch in all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., according to Yelp reviews. All have at least four stars on Yelp based on hundreds of reviews, and many have won numerous other awards as well.
Bon appetit!
Alabama: Five Bar in Birmingham
Set in an unassuming building, Five Bar ups the excitement for Sunday brunch with a lively jazz band and a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. Standout dishes include airy beignets with a caramel apple reduction and — for heartier appetites — a breakfast cheeseburger with bacon and a fried egg.
Sample Yelp review: “The brunch is outstanding as many have noted, and who wouldn't agree when they see the array of options on the Bloody Mary bar?”
Alaska: Snow City Cafe in Anchorage
Come early or expect a long wait (don’t worry, there’s coffee for those in the queue) at this perennial favorite that’s been serving Anchorage for 20 years.
For a true taste of the state, opt for Eggs Benedict with king crab cakes or smoked salmon cakes, or go for the Tundra Scramble with (yes) reindeer sausage, green pepper, mushroom, red onion and cheddar.
Sample Yelp review: “This is my #1 favorite breakfast/brunch spot in all of Alaska. It's tough to beat.”
Arkansas: The Root Cafe in Little Rock
Fresh and local is the name of the game at The Root Cafe, and though there’s an emphasis on seasonal veggies, meat eaters won’t go hungry. Choose from classic dishes like omelettes or buttermilk pancakes or try one of their more eclectic options, like eggs bahn mi served on toasted baguette with housemade garlic mayo, pickled carrot and daikon radish, fresh jalapeno and cilantro, hoisin and Sriracha.
Sample Yelp review: “Oh, y'all, I LOVED my experience here. They are one of those establishments that is clearly dedicated to supporting local farmers and helping the environment. It is a fun and hip environment. You drink your coffee from older coffee mugs. They use cloth napkins instead of paper, and the tables look up cycled. The food was DELICIOUS.”
Arizona: Prep & Pastry in Tucson
Prep & Pastry serves up brunch dishes that run the gamut from simple (eggs, potatoes and toast) to complex (cast iron duck confit), with a whole range in between.
For a morning kick, try the green chile French toast on green chile bread with jalapeno relish, lime crema and sunny-side-up eggs, washed down with the mimosa of the day. Bottom’s up!
Sample Yelp review: “This place is a Instagram addict's dream!!”
California: Zazie in San Francisco
A San Francisco institution since 1992, Zazie serves creative French-influenced cuisine. Brunch is available seven days a week and includes standout dishes like the La Mer Benedict with avocado and hand-picked California Dungeness crab, and classic French dishes like Ahi Tuna Salade Niçoise.
Sample Yelp review: “The best I can suggest trying is their special pancakes since they are fluffy with a yum lemon custard and they make you feel in heaven, not just food heaven like HEAVEN HEAVEN.”
Colorado: Snooze in Denver
Snooze started in Denver and has grown to include locations throughout the West — and its popularity is no surprise to anyone who has dined on its delicious and creative dishes, like the pineapple upside down pancakes with caramelized pineapple chunks, housemade vanilla crème anglaise and cinnamon butter.
Can’t decide which of their takes on eggs Benedict to try? Get a “benny duo” with two options, and don’t miss out on one of their unique brunch libations like the Bacon and Eggs, made with bacon-infused bourbon, house sour, egg white and bacon.
Sample Yelp review: “The combination of stars earned and reviews submitted make this restaurant not only probably one of the best in Denver, but arguably competitive for the top breakfast spot in all of North America.”
Connecticut: Rooster Company in Newington
With a name like Rooster Company, it’s no surprise that this farm-to-table restaurant specializes in rotisserie-style chicken — or that their chicken and waffles is one of the most popular items on the menu. Fancy the other white meat? Try the pork belly Benedict.
For a classic cider-and-donuts pairing with a twist, sip on an apple cider mimosa with champagne, cider and a cinnamon sugar rim as you simultaneously feast on a glazed donut slider with griddled breakfast sausage, pickled red onion, apple and miso mayo.
Sample Yelp review: “Oh my gosh, I'm still dreaming about the chicken and waffles I had here for brunch 2 weeks ago.”
Delaware: Angelo’s Luncheonette in Wilmington
Unfussy and small (there are just a couple of booths and 12 counter seats), this charming diner is chockablock with historic charm in the form of antique signs, an early 20th-century cash register and an old soda fountain.
The menu is no-frills — no haute cuisine here — just good, simple fare like omelettes, scrambled eggs, home fries, pancakes, and French toast.
Sample Yelp review: “If you don't try this place out you are missing Americana at its finest!”
Florida: Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in Miami Beach
Yardbird is all about delicious, down-home Southern food with a modern twist. Look for classics like biscuits and gravy alongside more creative takes like the chicken ‘n’ watermelon ‘n’ waffles, which puts a new spin on the Southern favorite by adding honey hot sauce, chilled spiced watermelon, a Vermont sharp cheddar cheese waffle and bourbon maple syrup.
Sample Yelp review: “We waddled out of Yardbird so unbelievably blown away by such a delicious meal - and counting down until we could return back.”
Georgia: Atlanta Breakfast Club
This retro-chic diner decked out with red tables and shiny red and white vinyl chairs has all your favorite Southern favorites — and then some. Standards like shrimp and grits are anything but standard, while new takes on classics (like a Southern Benedict with turkey gravy on biscuits) keep crowds coming back.
Sample Yelp review: “Ate at this place three days in a row while visiting Atlanta.”
Hawaii: Koko Head Cafe in Honolulu
A longtime favorite of Oahu’s surfers (it’s located just off the beach), Koko Head Cafe is no secret, but one taste of celeb chef Lee Anne Wong’s Asian-influenced dishes and you’ll understand why the wait is worth it.
Go sweet with dishes like cornflake French toast with black pepper-maple syrup or try a savory dish like the Koko Moco, a beef patty served on garlic rice, with mushroom gravy, a sunny-side up egg and tempura kimchi.
Sample Yelp review: “This place is really really excellent for brunch! It's not your run of the mill bacon and eggs that people pay outrageous prices for; this place is unique, it's Asian fusion done very well.”
Iowa: Pullman Bar & Diner in Iowa City
This swanky diner shaped like a Pullman train car (long and narrow, with a counter down one side) offers an extensive selection of all your brunch faves — eggs Benedicts, corned beef hash, croque madame, chicken and biscuits — plus lunch options like salads, burgers and sandwiches.
Sample Yelp review: “Oh, Pullman. Thank you.”
Idaho: Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro in Boise
Goldy’s has been serving up classic breakfast and brunch dishes in a historic building adjacent to city hall for more than 20 years. Line up with the locals for filling favorites like corned beef hash and the tried-and-true “eggs any style” served with your choice of meat and toast.
Sample Yelp review: “Should you come here? Yes, imminently logical.”
Illinois: Au Cheval in Chicago
Home of 2015’s best burger in America (as declared by Bon Appetit), Au Cheval is one of Chicago’s most popular restaurants any time of day.
Brunch dishes range from simple and elegant (like an omelet with roasted peppers and fresh chevre) to downright decadent (foie gras and scrambled eggs). Don’t worry, the famous burger makes an appearance, too, as do creative cocktails like the Antica Flip with antica, rittenhouse rye and a farm egg.
Sample Yelp review: “BEST BURGER OF MY LIFE. THE HYPE IS REAL.”
Indiana: Milktooth in Indianapolis
Contemporary and cosmopolitan, Milktooth brings a creative spin to brunch classics. Alongside an eclectic collection of dishes like fish poke and potato-and-celeriac latkes, look for sweet treats like Dutch baby pancakes and sourdough brioche pecan sticky buns.
Don’t miss one of the restaurant’s equally unique speciality coffees, like the Caffe Rozata with espresso, orgeat, burnt cinnamon and steamed milk.
Sample Yelp review: “Their menu is filled with options that you'll read and then go, ‘wait wtf those ingredients didn't go together last I checked’, but then you order it and it's so amazingly good and you're left questioning your own existence.”
Kansas: Doo-Dah Diner in Wichita
Serving breakfast all week and a brunch buffet on Sunday, the Doo-Dah Diner (Doo-Dah is, inexplicably, a nickname for Wichita) is focused on scratch-made dishes like a fried bologna and egg sandwich or banana bread French toast, each evoking the history of the region and the people who settled it.
The best part: Every meal starts with a plate of warm monkey bread bites.
Sample Yelp review: “I am not a sweet breakfast person, but the banana bread French toast was literally transcendent.”
Kentucky: Harvest Restaurant in Louisville
One look at Harvest Restaurant’s farmhouse-chic decor and it’s not hard to guess the theme: locally sourced, farm-to-table food. In fact, 80 percent of the restaurant’s ingredients come from within 100 miles.
Fresh fruit and veggies feature prominently in dishes like the brioche French toast topped with strawberry-rhubarb compote or the inventively named Grits-N-Goo, featuring burgoo (a traditional Kentucky stew) with white grits and a chive biscuit.
Sample Yelp review: “I love that they have brief bios of all the local farmers they use, with a map of where each farm is located.”
Louisiana: Commander’s Palace in New Orleans
A New Orleans institution since 1893 and the winner of six James Beard Foundation Awards, Commander's Palace is as classic as it gets in the Big Easy. The menu pulls from the city’s French and Creole past with refined, some might say slightly old-school dishes (when was the last time you saw turtle soup on a menu?).
For a taste of the rich cuisine of New Orleans, try the Cochon De Lait eggs Benedict with 16-hour barbecue pork shoulder served over buttermilk biscuits with tasso hollandaise. As if that weren’t enough, for dessert there’s Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé served with warm whiskey sauce.
Dishes come served with — but of course — smooth New Orleans jazz.
Sample Yelp review: “The live jazz brunch is now quite possibly one of my favorite things that I can ever tell stories of to all my friends now.”
Massachusetts: Milkweed in Boston
Four words: Holly’s grilled love muffin. At Milkweed, that means the sweet combo of banana and chocolate toasted to melty perfection. Not into sweet for breakfast? Sample Yelp review: “If you're within 50 miles of Milkweed, go, now.”

Set in the heart of downtown Detroit, Dime Store turns out consistently creative brunch dishes like the popular duck bop hash sauteed with spinach, onions, bulgogi, pickled veggies and Sriracha drizzle.
Much of the bread, cheese, coffee, beer, produce and meat are sourced from Michigan purveyors.
Sample Yelp review: “What an absolutely fantastic place to grab brunch. That coming from a guy who hates it when people use the words ‘absolutely’ and ‘fantastic.’”
Minnesota: The Kenwood in Minneapolis
The menu changes often at this European-inspired restaurant with a focus on local ingredients, but one staple is a beloved take on huevos rancheros with braised pork, potatoes, fried egg and harissa. Craving a bite of something sweet? You can add a single pancake with black walnut butter for just a few bucks.

Pillowy soft biscuits come in several varieties, including waffled pressed biscuits (try The Sassy, with cinnamon vanilla biscuits served with buttermilk sweet gravy), biscuit French toast (The Sojourner is topped with strawberries and chantilly cream) and spooned cakes (go savory with The Southerner, a dropped biscuit topped with white gravy and sage sausage).
