Brunch isn’t just a meal — for many, it’s practically a lifestyle. Unlike its siblings, breakfast and lunch, brunch conjures images of a leisurely weekend meal shared with friends, of indulging in dishes typically not on your daily diet plan, of lingering over a mimosa or Bloody Mary because there’s nowhere else you need to be.

But brunch isn’t a one-dish-fits-all meal. As these restaurants show, while there are certainly some staples, popular brunch dishes can vary wildly, taking influence from the season, the local produce, international cuisine, or the chef’s own imagination.

The following restaurants are the best for brunch in all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., according to Yelp reviews. All have at least four stars on Yelp based on hundreds of reviews, and many have won numerous other awards as well.

Alabama: Five Bar in Birmingham

Set in an unassuming building, Five Bar ups the excitement for Sunday brunch with a lively jazz band and a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. Standout dishes include airy beignets with a caramel apple reduction and — for heartier appetites — a breakfast cheeseburger with bacon and a fried egg.

Alaska: Snow City Cafe in Anchorage

Come early or expect a long wait (don’t worry, there’s coffee for those in the queue) at this perennial favorite that’s been serving Anchorage for 20 years.

For a true taste of the state, opt for Eggs Benedict with king crab cakes or smoked salmon cakes, or go for the Tundra Scramble with (yes) reindeer sausage, green pepper, mushroom, red onion and cheddar.

Arkansas: The Root Cafe in Little Rock

Fresh and local is the name of the game at The Root Cafe, and though there’s an emphasis on seasonal veggies, meat eaters won’t go hungry. Choose from classic dishes like omelettes or buttermilk pancakes or try one of their more eclectic options, like eggs bahn mi served on toasted baguette with housemade garlic mayo, pickled carrot and daikon radish, fresh jalapeno and cilantro, hoisin and Sriracha.

Arizona: Prep & Pastry in Tucson

Prep & Pastry serves up brunch dishes that run the gamut from simple (eggs, potatoes and toast) to complex (cast iron duck confit), with a whole range in between.

For a morning kick, try the green chile French toast on green chile bread with jalapeno relish, lime crema and sunny-side-up eggs, washed down with the mimosa of the day. Bottom’s up!

California: Zazie in San Francisco

A San Francisco institution since 1992, Zazie serves creative French-influenced cuisine. Brunch is available seven days a week and includes standout dishes like the La Mer Benedict with avocado and hand-picked California Dungeness crab, and classic French dishes like Ahi Tuna Salade Niçoise.

Colorado: Snooze in Denver

Snooze started in Denver and has grown to include locations throughout the West — and its popularity is no surprise to anyone who has dined on its delicious and creative dishes, like the pineapple upside down pancakes with caramelized pineapple chunks, housemade vanilla crème anglaise and cinnamon butter.

Florida: Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in Miami Beach

Yardbird is all about delicious, down-home Southern food with a modern twist. Serving breakfast all week and a brunch buffet on Sunday, the Doo-Dah Diner (Doo-Dah is, inexplicably, a nickname for Wichita) is focused on scratch-made dishes like a fried bologna and egg sandwich or banana bread French toast, each evoking the history of the region and the people who settled it.

The best part: Every meal starts with a plate of warm monkey bread bites.

Kentucky: Harvest Restaurant in Louisville

One look at Harvest Restaurant’s farmhouse-chic decor and it’s not hard to guess the theme: locally sourced, farm-to-table food. In fact, 80 percent of the restaurant’s ingredients come from within 100 miles.

Fresh fruit and veggies feature prominently in dishes like the brioche French toast topped with strawberry-rhubarb compote or the inventively named Grits-N-Goo, featuring burgoo (a traditional Kentucky stew) with white grits and a chive biscuit.

Louisiana: Commander’s Palace in New Orleans

A New Orleans institution since 1893 and the winner of six James Beard Foundation Awards, Commander's Palace is as classic as it gets in the Big Easy. The menu pulls from the city’s French and Creole past with refined, some might say slightly old-school dishes (when was the last time you saw turtle soup on a menu?).

For a taste of the rich cuisine of New Orleans, try the Cochon De Lait eggs Benedict with 16-hour barbecue pork shoulder served over buttermilk biscuits with tasso hollandaise. As if that weren’t enough, for dessert there’s Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé served with warm whiskey sauce.

Decked out in edison bulbs and concrete floors, Cava Mezze is sophisticated and cool, and the ideal choice for someone who doesn’t want to choose. For $35, take your pic from dozens of items on the all-you-can-eat buffet.

For those less averse to commitment, a la carte options range from the Spicy Lamb Benedict to a Nutella waffle with walnut, bananas, and cream.

Maine: Bayside American Cafe in Portland

Family owned since 2003, Bayside American Cafe isn’t just quintessential America, it’s quintessential Maine. As such, seafood features heavily on the menu in dishes like the lobster frittata and New England crab cakes.

Michigan: Dime Store in Detroit

Set in the heart of downtown Detroit, Dime Store turns out consistently creative brunch dishes like the popular duck bop hash sauteed with spinach, onions, bulgogi, pickled veggies and Sriracha drizzle.

Much of the bread, cheese, coffee, beer, produce and meat are sourced from Michigan purveyors.

Missouri: Egg in Saint Louis

With a full and eclectic Southwest-inspired menu that includes breakfast sopes, breakfast tacos, and cornbread and gravy, there’s no shortage of options at Egg. Yet one of the most popular dishes remains the smoked pork belly Benedict served on warm, moist cornbread flecked with pieces of blue corn.

Mississippi: Table 100 in Flowood

The Sassy Biscuit is, as its name implies, all about the biscuit. Known for long waits and hefty portions, the Sunny Point Café is family owned and community minded; each month the restaurant raises funds for a different local charity.

Nebraska: Kitchen Table in Omaha

Originally from Omaha, the owners of Kitchen Table lived in San Francisco for five years, where they honed their craft and gathered ideas to bring back for their dream restaurant. The west coast influence shows in a menu that’s small but mighty.

Simple dishes — like buttermilk pancakes with juneberry syrup or a wagyu beef brunch burger with a fried egg — let the ingredients shine.

New Hampshire: Republic Cafe in Manchester

The first restaurant to receive “certified Local” status from the New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant connection, Republic Cafe focuses on sourcing fresh ingredients from local providers.
