Usually a paradise of green wilderness rising from the sparkling ocean, Hawaii’s Maui island is currently living through the aftermath of one of the most deadly wildfires in the history of the United States.
The fires started on Aug. 8, 2023, and combined with high winds from Hurricane Dora, ravaging the island so fast that many were forced to flee on foot or jump into the ocean. As of Aug. 16, the death toll is 106.
Many survivors lost everything to the fires and are now facing homelessness, hunger and an uncertain future. Even if you’re far from Hawaii, you can help victims by donating time, money or items to these trustworthy organizations and companies.
Donate to American Red Cross of Hawaii
One of the most trusted international organizations, the Red Cross is dedicated to providing disaster relief. The American Red Cross of Hawaii is currently concentrated in helping victims of the Maui wildfires find shelter. Additionally, the organization is providing hot meals, medical supplies, health services and charging stations so people can communicate with loved ones.
You can donate online or volunteer in person. However, volunteering is only recommended to people who are already in Hawaii.
Donate to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund
The Hawaii Community Foundation is a local organization that is currently operating the Maui Strong Fund. One-hundred percent of donations are being used to distribute among community organizations. The foundation is working with local leaders to determine what needs have to be prioritized day to day. Organizations that have received funds from the foundation include the Aloha Diaper Bank and Hale Mkua Health Services.
Donate online to contribute to the more than $34 million that has been raised. Much more is still needed.
Volunteer at (or Donate to) Maui Food Bank
Maui Food Bank contributes to lowering hunger amongst Hawaiians. Right now, the organization is overwhelmed, having to meet an unprecedented demand for food. Besides housing, this is perhaps the most dire need for those who lost their homes and jobs.
If you don’t have money, you can hold a virtual food drive. Or, if you’re in Hawaii, you can volunteer for in-person food drives or to help with operations. Donating online is also an option.
Get Takeout From L&L Hawaiian Barbecue
If you’ve already donated but want to keep helping victims of the Hawaii fires, consider getting takeout from L&L Hawaiian BBQ. The local Hawaiian chain is all over the United States and is currently donating $1 for every order to the American Red Cross of Hawaii.
Despite losing one of its locations to the wildfires (and being unable to operate another), the chain is helping displaced Lahaina employees find temporary housing and jobs. Orders have to go through L&L’s mobile app or website.
